Elsa Wig Guide and Accessories

Hello my little snowflakes!

Growing up, I was like any girl, totally and ardently in love with Disney movies.  I remember wrapping myself in my mom's oversized furry blanket, walking around on all fours, and belting out "I Just Can't Wait to be King," like I was some Broadway lion.  But things have changed since last week.  Now I can't stop singing Disney's Frozen album!  It was just an adorable movie!  High five to Disney for finally creating female roles that think love at first sight is ridic and sistas before mistas!  And thus began my desire to cosplay Elsa!

As I'm doing research for my own Elsa cosplay, I will be sharing with you what I find.  And so, to start, I have combined all of my wig research into one comprehensive guide.

E L S A ' S  H A I R S T Y L E

So Elsa's style is pretty self explanatory: a simple side swept french braid with shorter layers tousled out of her face.  Her hair is a platinum or titanium blonde color.  It's important to note that her hair isn't entirely white/silver, and she does appear to have golden undertones.  So keep that in mind when you're picking out your wig's color.      

She also has a sparkle to her hair that you can easily mimic with one of those cans of sparkle hair spray.  However, if we want to get really nit picky, it actually looks like she may have strands of silver sparkly hair instead of all over sparkle.  It almost looks like tinsel to me, but maybe I'm crazy.  You could ventilate your wig, the process of adding wig fibers, with these strands of hair, but personally, sparkle hair spray seems like a more practical approach.

W H A T  T Y P E  O F  W I G  S H O U L D  I  B U Y ?

This is a very important question!  To answer it, first you must ask yourself what quality of costume are you looking to don.  Then you must ask yourself how much money you're willing to spend.  I mean, if you're just putting together a super quick Elsa costume for a weekend party, then you might not mind buying a party store wig.  However, for the purpose of this guide, I'm going to assume you're here because you want a quality Elsa wig for your cosplay (costume play).  Some people will put a lot of effort into the costume, but then totally skimp on the wig.  I cannot stress enough how important it is to buy a quality wig.  Wigs will make or break a costume, so if it's within your budget, I would spend a little more for something that will compliment your costume well.  

Additionally, there are a lot of levels of quality when it comes to wig based partly on the type of wig fiber used.  I go more into detail about the difference in fibers on my Daenerys Wig Guide here.  Basically, you want to shoot for wigs made of hiperlon or even kanekalon fibers.  They're higher quality and heat resistant so they will be easier to style later.

Okay, getting on to the most important quality you should look for in Elsa's wig: a lace front.

  W H A T ' S  T H I S  A B O U T  A  L A C E  F R O N T?

Basically a lace front wig is going to give you a natural looking hairline.  Because Elsa's hair is swept back in the front, you would see a very unsightly wig base (the part of the wig the hair strands are threaded into) at your hairline with a normal, non-lace, wig.  You might be able to get away with it in thicker wigs with some ninja styling, but it will tricky.

Lace fronts require a little more care when putting on.  You can't simply plop it on and go.  You have to trim the excess lace close to your hairline, and then use an adhesive like wig tape or spirt gum to actually glue the lace front down onto your forehead.  This can be a little intimidating for some, but there's plenty of tutorials online for easy application steps.  

These wigs are generally hand ventilated at the front so they're going to be a little more pricey.  So you're going to have to ask yourself what's in your budget.  If you want to save money, or you're just looking to expand your fabrication skills, you could purchase a regular wig and add your own lace front.  This may be desirable as wigs with widow's peaks are hard to come by (the 'v' shaped point at the hairline).
  
However, I'm certain I've seen screencaps of her where there was no apparent widow's peak.  So really, it's your own personal preference. : )

Wig Name: Suzi by Arda Wigs

Cost: $70 + shipping

Fiber: Hiperlon

With proper styling, this wig could serve as the perfect Elsa wig.  The short piecey waves are perfect for her back swept bangs.  Additionally, this is an Arda Wig.  They have an awesome standing in the cosplay community for their quality and service.  However, as of 2/14, this wig is on back order, so if you need your Elsa wig before March, you'll have to skip this option.  It is a lace front wig which means that it will require an adhesive to stay on (like spirit gum or wig tape).  

Pros:

• Lace-front = Natural hairline
• Short layers on the top for Elsa's swept back bangs
• Widow's peak like Elsa's
• Heat resistant for styling

Cons: 

• Longer than needed so will require some trimming
• Because it's lace front, it will take more time to apply
• On backorder until March

Wig Name: Morpheus in Titanium Blonde by Arda Wigs

Cost: $60 + shipping

Fiber: Hiperlon

Now, I know this wig is a little short, but I wanted to add it to this guide because of a great YouTube tutorial that uses this wig for Elsa (Link below).  Additionally, you would need to buy a weft or ponytail to add to the length of the wig.  Wig wefts are simply sewn into the wig cap for adding length and volume.  This is more troublesome, but because this wig is not currently on back order, it may be a more viable option for some.  Remember, lace fronts will require an adhesive or tape to secure at the hairline.   

Pros:

• Lace-front = Natural hairline
• Short layers on the top for Elsa's swept back bangs
• Titanium blonde has a good golden undertone
• Not on back order 
• Heat resistant for styling

Cons: 

• A tad too short so will require a wig weft to lengthen
• Because it's lace front, it will take more time to apply
• Does not have widow's peak

Wig Name: Nyx in Natural Blonde by Epic Cosplay

Cost: $37.99 + shipping

Fiber: ?

Despite not having a lace front, this wig could potentially serve as a decent Elsa cosplay.  It has good length, good color, and already cut bangs.  The only issue would be potentially seeing the wig base at the hairline, so this will make styling a little trickier.  You would need to bring down the strands enough to cover the hairline while styling.  You could also sew in lace and glue in or ventilate more stands of hair, making your own lace front.

One cosplayer used this wig as well as the same wig in white, wefted them together, and came out with great results (picture here).  The golden blonde and white strands married well together to create Elsa's shade.  Here's a good tutorial for splicing two wigs together: here.    

Pros:

• Good length
• Long bangs for swept back style
• A good shade of platinum blonde
• Heat resistant for styling
• Less expensive than lace front wigs

Cons: 

• Not lace front so no natural hairline
• May need additional wefts to mimic Elsa's thick volume. 
• No widow's peak

This wig is promising because Epic Cosplay states extra wefts have been sewn into the crown giving it more volume for Elsa's thick braid.  However, despite it's title on the site, this is not a lace front, so styling will be trickier as you attempt to cover up any wig base showing at the hairline.   

Pros:

• Extra wefts for more volume
• Nice golden undertones
• Good length
• Less expensive than lace front wigs

Cons: 

• Not a lace front so no natural hairline
• No bangs, so will require trimming

This wig is perfect for anyone who is intimidated by wig styling.  It's already ready to go!  It has a nice lace front and extra sewn in wefts for more volume.  Also, this is an Etsy listing which makes me super happy because I love supporting Etsy artists! : )  Again remember that lace fronts require an adhesive at the hairline to be worn.    

Pros:

• Already styled!
• Lace-front = Natural hairline
• Extra wefts for volume
• Perfect golden undertones

Cons: 

• More expensive than non styled wigs
• Lace front requires more time to apply

This wig could be a good option for those of you in Europe looking for a good Elsa wig.  This wig has perfect tones of blonde, a good length, and a lace front!  Braiding through the waves shouldn't be too much trouble, but trimming the bangs could be troublesome.  

Pros:

• Lace-front = Natural hairline
• Perfect golden undertones
• Good length
• Good option for European cosplayers

Cons: 

• Will need trimming at bangs
• Pricier than non lace front wigs
• Lace front requires more time to apply

 S T Y L I N G  Y O U R  W I G

Supernovadobe has a great video tutorial for styling your Elsa cosplay.  She also includes in the video how she sews in wefts for length and thickness, and glues hair to form a widow's peak.

The basic guideline for her styling is as follows:

1. Before styling, test your heat source (curling iron, blow dryer) on a small wig strand in the back to make sure your wig can withstand this form of heat.  
2. Carefully comb or brush wig if a little tangled. 
•  I like to use my fingers to comb out tangles if I can.
3. Trim wig to proper length including bangs. 
• bangs should be around chin length
• always remember to cut parallel to the hair strands
4. Add wefts or widows peak using tutorial above.
• wefts can be sewed or glued onto the wig cap
5. Carefully brush strands into place and begin a french braid at the crown of the wig.  
6. Pull braid to the front as you are braiding and secure with clear elastic.
7. Divide bangs into 7-8 pieces.
8. Spritz hair piece with hairspray and heat the fibers with your hairdryer.

 H A I R  A C C E S S O R I E S

Elsa has crystal snowflakes that decorate the length of her side braid.  However, the snowflakes design and appearance differ scenes in the movie, and they're completely different from promotional ads.  Sometimes the snowflakes appear tinted blue, sometimes clear, sometimes silver.  So at this point you're basically just going to have to decide which ever one you find cutest! : )  Elsa generally looks like she has 6 snowflakes in most scenes from what I can tell.  She has one large at the end of the braid, two medium sized, and three small sized.

Cosplaying Esla

Alright, I know I said I was going to be working on a Tauriel cosplay, but I just FINALLY saw Disney's Frozen.  And much like everyone else, I'm hooked.  So Tauriel is on hold until I'm done obsessing over my newest cosplay: Elsa.

So far, I've been doing tons of research and bought several fabrics and materials for her accessories.  And of course I have to share that with you guys! : )  So please check back for those!

Daenerys Swag

Bonjour, mes petites flocons de neige! (Hello, my little snowflakes)

I hope you're all keeping warm in these wintery months.  If you live in the mid-west, like moi, you're probably cursing this arctic weather we're having.  I wouldn't mind the cold if it didn't make driving so darn difficult.  Every morning I say a prayer that my car will start despite the freezing temperatures.  Does it work?  Not usually, but ah well.  Three cheers for jumper cables!  Hoozah!

So I've had several requests for a few more Dany items, and I'm happy to finally bring them to you:

D A E N E R Y S  R I N G  

Yay!  Dany's ring!  I never wanted to make this before 'cause I could never find good shots of it, and I really didn't want to make a replica when I had little knowledge of how it looked.  Finally, I tracked down upclose photos of the ring, and without further ado:

I used a light weight aluminum metal for the ring portion and polymer clay for the top accent part.  I painted it with acrylic paints and added texture.  Then I slopped like literally ten coats of satin finish to it 'cause I was worried it wouldn't be durable enough.  Thankfully, it's been plenty durable.  I've been puttin' this baby through all kinds of wear and it's been holding up better than I expected.

D A E N E R Y S  C O W L  

I fell in love with Dany's season 3 sapphire dress, and I really wanted to implement elements of her style into my own daily fashion.  And TADA!  A Dany inspired hooded cowl!  I cannot get enough of cowls, especially ones large enough to wear as a hood.  They look so chic I could squeak.  (WTF, why would that make me squeak?)  Anyways, they're super practical for the chillier months.  I never leave my house without one.    

The cowl is made with 100% acrylic yarn, so it's super soft and warm.  

And it also doubles as a ninja outfit!  HIYA!  (Available in my Etsy shop!)

I notice in GoT's season 4 trailer, Dany is still wearing her statement slave collar.  And I thought I'd share this updated version of my collar.  I really tried to use texture and color to replicate the cast iron look.  How'd I do? : )

Update: Cons, DIII Party and More!

Yo!  So I know I haven't posted nearly as much as I should, but I plan to rectify that.  2014 New Year's Resolution: POST ON DA BLOG!  I have a lot of plans for upcoming posts that I'm verrrrrry excited about : )  I have a lot of ideas for new cosplays and consequently new tutorials for you guys!  Also, I have some pics to share with you guys from my DIII Whimsyshire party and some pics from a recent con I visited.  I also want to share with you guys my ideas for upcoming cosplays.  So read on if any of this interests you!

Also, a note to all those who are here because of my one Dany cosplay pic: I'm still shocked and humbled that that pic became so widespread.  I only intended to help a few girls out with their Dany costumes, so I put together the costume tutorial and slapped that picture on there.  To say I was shocked to see my own photo on Reddit while I was browsing is an understatement.  And comments were more than entertaining.  Except the dude that said I had a lazy eye.  You can go to hell! : P  Anywhos, thanks for the support, guys! : )      

D I I I   L A N  P A R T Y

Diablo is easily one of my favorite video game franchises, and with the new expansion coming out, what better to celebrate than with a DIII Whimsyshire LAN partay?  While my male friends may have appreciated my enthusiasm to decorate for our LAN, I'm pretty sure they couldn't understand why I was doing this.  But mah girl gamers got mah back, right?!  You ladies get it, riiiiight?  Well, whatever.  I thought it was wicked. >:)  For those of you gamers who've never played Diablo III, well, I'm not really sure what you're spending your gaming time on.  I definitely recommend giving it a try!  The expansion, Reaper of Souls, is set to release on March 25, 2014.  

 Alright, to start, I tried copying the cupcake health globes that appear as you slaughter pink teddy bears and smiling flowers.  They're a vanilla cake batter with cherry frosting and topped with a stemmed cherry.  Not terribly difficult, but terribly yummy. : )  Wait, does that make sense?

Next I tried to find toys that would brighten up the table setting.  I was able to find purple pony toys and smiling flowers at my local dollar store, so I bought a bunch of them to decorate the space with.  To my friends' dismay, I made them take them home as party favors 'cause after the party I no longer had any need for a dozen My Little Pony rip offs and creepy pedo flowers.  Now that I think about it, I wonder if they kept them?  Hm...

This addition to the LAN party was the most time consuming: the Diablo piñata.  (Complete with soulstone!)  I made the head by paper maché-ing around a blown balloon then popping the balloon once it was hardened.  The body, arms, and legs were made from cut up cardboard box.  The soulstone and horns were made from cardboard and aluminum foil to give them their shape.  After the skeleton was hot glued together, I next cut strips of tissue paper and stuck it to the body with glue stick.  Add a little candy, and voilà!  Fortunately, my hours of work weren't demolished for the goodies inside as my friends insisted "piñatas were for kids."  Pssshhhh!          

   

C O N V E N T I O N  P I C S

So recently my friend Michael and I visited a local convention.  Because I decided to go last minute, I didn't have time to plan a new cosplay, and I had to wear something I already had.  Queue Dany costume.   

But this time I had my circle lenses!  Forgive the cam ***** pic, but I was super pleased with the way they looked in real life.  I mean, they look almost natural!  (If violet eyes could look natural...)  More people should start wearing these day to day in the West.  If anyone's curious, they're the G&G GBT Violet lenses from Candylens.com.  I definitely recommend buying lenses from this company!  They wrote me a hand written thank you note for my purchase and even personally emailed me to make sure my order arrived safe and sound.  What company does that anymore?  They definitely secured me as a future customer, and I definitely recommend them to you guys!  Okay, on to some sweet pics I was able to snap on the con!

I was super excited to see this girl 'cause I've never seen a Skip Beat cosplay before, and it's one of my all time favorite manga.  She's the Love Me Kyoko from Skip Beat.

F U T U R E  C O S P L A Y

Do you guys recognize this bad*ss lady above?  The cosplay I'm working on next is Tauriel of Mirkwood from the Hobbit films!  She's unfortunately not in the original books, so I tip my hat to Mr. Jackson for adding her character to the films; the Hobbit was in desperate need of a powerful female role.  She reminds me a lot of Dany in that she just exudes raw power and strength from every inch of her.  Seriously, you don't want to mess with this chick.  She duel wields daggers as well as a bow, and I haven't decided which would be more awesome to make.  Maybe both?

Hey guys!  So, I finally wrote out more instructions for compiling your Dany costume from Season 3.  I decided to just edit my original post so all that info is one place.  I'll be uploading instructions for putting together your final costume.  Stay tuned!

Daenerys Wig Guide

Hey guys!  So, I had a lot of you messaged me asking for advice on Dany wigs, so I thought I'd just make a post about it!  Now, I'm no wig expert, but this is just some data I was able to gather from searching for a wig of my own.  

It's worth to note that Dany's hair changes considerably between the seasons, so your wig selection will depend on which costume you'd like to cosplay.  (PS: cosplay is just short for costume play, i.e. dressing up) As the seasons progress, her locks transform from tight waves, to crimped strands, then to loose curls.  Really, you can use whatever wig you find cutest!  But if you were looking to stay accurate, I thought I'd mention that!

W I G  F I B E R S : HOW DO YOU WORK?!

So there are ton of different wig fibers out there, but you're mainly going to run into the same few.  Those are Hiperlon, Kanekalon, and Modlon.  What's the difference you ask?  Well here's a little break down:

Hiperlon

• Heat resistant for styling at ANY heat
• Less likely to tangle
• Less shiny than other fiber
• Usually more expensive

Kanekalon

• May be heat resistant for styling at LOW heats only (Note: hot water styling can work well on these wigs, but hair dryers, straighteners, and curlers at even low heat may melt the fibers)
• More likely to tangle
• More shiny than Hiperlon
• Less expensive 

Modlon

• Low quality wigs
• Usually the fiber used for party store wigs
• Not heat resistant at all

Overall, if you're really into making a great cosplay, I'd definitely recommend hiperlon or similar fibers.  However, many of my wigs have been Kanekalon and they're just fine (besides the tangling... especially on straight wigs)  Some people even prefer the Kanekalon wigs 'cause they tend to be shinier than Hiperlon.  If you're just looking for a Dany wig for Halloween, Kanekalon is definitely a reasonable option.  As for Modlon, please, for the love of the Old Gods, please do not ever buy Modlon wigs!  They're such bad quality and they will always ruin a good cosplay.  Buy these only if you're super desperate! ; )  

T O  L A C E  F R O N T  O R  N O T  T O  L A C E  F R O N T 

That is the question!

What is a lace front wig you ask?  Well, it's a wig that has the synthetic or hair strands threaded through a sheer lace front.  Check out this wig from Arda-wigs.com below to see what I mean:

This creates a realistic hairline that's best for cosplaying certain characters.  It also lets you part the hair in the front any way you want, and it will look totally natural.  You won't see an ugly wig base at your parts!  Because Daenerys' hair is pulled back into braids, a lace front wig will really lend itself well to her hair styling.  However, because lace fronts are generally hand ventilated (the process of threading strands of hair into the base), these wigs tend to be a bit pricier.  

So, you really need to ask yourself how much money you intend to put into your costume.  If you're willing to spend the money, then I definitely recommend purchasing a lace front.  If you're just looking for a quick wig for say a small costume party, then a non lace front can be perfect for you. 

H O W  D O  I  E V E N  W E A R  A  L A C E  F R O N T

Essentially, you will be fitting the wig to your head, cutting the lace, and gluing the front with an adhesive such as spirit gum.  Here's a good video for how to wear a lace front wig: How to Wear a Lace Front Wig

So there's tons of wigs out there that are probably good options for Daenerys cosplay, but these are just a few I came across during my search... Ahem!  Let the wig options commence!

S E A S O N  1 - 2  W I G S

Wig Name: Lunar Dragon Fire Resist 20 by The Five Wits

Cost: $40 + shipping

Fiber: ?

If you're going to cosplay season 1 or season 2, a lot of people recommend using this wig.  A lot of the great Dany cosplays you see on the internet have used this one.

Pros:

• Accurate length
• Heat resistant for styling (low heat)
• Thick so you can't see mesh cap underneath
• Many Dany cosplayers have recommended this wig

Cons: 

• A touch too silver, Dany has slightly more golden undertone in my opinion

Purchase: Lunar Dragon Wig

Wig Name: Rhapsody by Dolluxe

Cost: $64 + shipping

Fiber: ?

This is another great Dany wig that many cosplayers rant and rave about.  However, it's unfortunately not a lace front wig, but it does have extra wefts sewn into it, creating good volume.  This volume could help hide the wig cap at the hairline if styled properly.   

Pros: 

• Accurate length
• Good texture that mirrors Dany's
• Thick to cover mesh cap
• Heat resistant for styling (low heat)
• Many Dany cosplayers have recommended this wig

Cons:

• A little too poofy (maybe this can be tamed when you add your princess braids)
• No golden undertones
• A little pricey
• Not lace front

Purchase: Rhapsody Wig

Wig Name: Crimped Wavy Long Platinum Blonde Wig

• Looks to be an accurate color from photos

Cons

• A little short
• Can't speak to the quality
• Not lace front

Now, here a few options if you're wanting to cosplay her Season 3 style.

This wig is from Arda Wigs.  It's a lace front, so it will give you a very realistic hairline as you style.  It has good tones (Titanium Blonde), and a good length.  The long layers will also make braiding a piece of cake. (braiding short layers and trying to manage fly aways can be a nightmare! :p)  I have ordered a handful of wigs from Arda, and they always have very solid quality.              

Pros:

• Perfect golden undertones
• Nice loose waves
• Lace front (realistic hairline)
• Good length
• Long layers make for easy braiding
• Heat resistant 

Cons: 

• More expensive than non-lace fronts

Purchase: Arda Wigs

Wig Name:  Queen Lacefront by Lockshop

This wig was shared with me by one of my readers.  I've never ordered from Lockshopwigs.com, so I can't personally comment on their quality and service.  However, the color tones are gorgeous and the lace front will really give you a realistic hairline for your Dany cosplay.  However, the info on the site states the fibers are lot more course and consequently will take much care to get it styled just right, and brushing will be more difficult.  Remember, you will need to glue or tape down the lace front of this wig, so it will take more time wear.  "These are not wigs that you can simply put on out of the bag."

• Lace front (realistic hairline)
• Good length
• Long layers make for easy braiding

This wig is available from Wigfashion.com and through their ebay storefront.  I can't be sure of the quality, but based on the photos and ebay feedback, it could serve as a perfect Dany wig.  Reminder: this is a lace front wig, so you will need to either glue or tape the front to your forehead; it'll take some time to put on.  (Thank you Laurams07 for the link!)

Fiber: Kanekelon

This is actually the wig I purchased for my own Dany Cosplay.  While it's a decent wig, I may consider another wig in the future.  It's Kanekelon fibers, which look pretty good in person (A lot of cosplay wigs are made of this fiber).  However, the shortened bangs were tricky when braiding, and the wig wasn't the thickest.    

Pros:

• Perfect golden undertones
• Nice loose waves
• Inexpensive
• Easy transaction with seller
• Good length
• May be heat resistant at low temps

Cons: 

• Not very thick (this was tricky when adding princess braids so that you wouldn't see mesh cap)
• Not all one length (bangs made it tricky to braid)
• Not lace front, so wig cap was hard to cover

Wig Name: Arwen (in Titanium Blonde) by Arda Wigs

Cost: $70 + Shipping

Fiber: Hiperlon

This wig has great texture despite its length.  It will need some cutting to get it to the appropriate length, but it has a lace front, so I think it's worth the extra trouble.  Remember, a lace front will require gluing or taping of the front to your forehead, so it'll take more time to put this wig on, but it will look much more natural.

• Nice textured waves
• Titantium Blonde has perfect golden undertones
• Lace Front (natural hairline)
• May be heat resistant at low-high temps 

Cons: 

• Will need cutting
• More expensive than non lace front wigs

I would order this wig in 613 (the swatch to the right of the wig)  I can personally speak to the quality of this company's wigs having ordered several from them in the past.  I'm always super happy with my wigs from Amphigory.  However, this is not a lace front, so again, styling to cover the unsightly wig cap at the hairline may be tricky.

• Long loose waves that mirror Dany's
• Personally know this company has good quality
• Thick fibers
• Can order in several blond shades
• May be heat resistant at low temps

While I can't speak personally for Arda wigs, there are a lot of cosplayers that rant and rave about their quality.  Titanium blonde seems to be the most agreed upon color when cosplayers purchase a Dany wig from Arda.  

Pros:

• Heat resistant for styling (any heat)
• Available in multiple shades of blonde 
• Nice loose curls
• Good length
• Less likely to tangle
• Many cosplayers recommend Arda wigs

Cons:

• A tad too long
• Not lace front so no natural hairline

So this is a common wig cosplayers have been purchasing for their Dany costume.  I do love its lace front (so you'll have a natural hairline), and its length and color (ordered in titanium blonde) are perfect.  However, I do find the waves to be a bit messier than Dany's.  Perhaps reshaping the curls into more tamed waves with your curling iron could make this a perfect wig.

• Many cosplayers recommend Arda wigs
• Lace front, so natural hairline

• Messier curls than what Dany has
